This month’s artist in The Gallery is Dutch photographer Orlando Haay. It features a bunch of awesome photos from the Zwartecross 2012, the RebelJam and more! Enjoy
1. Let’s start with a small introduction: where are you from, age, years of shooting and what got you interested in shooting photos?
Hi my name is Orlando Haak I am 30 years old and I live in Groningen a small but great city in the top of Holland. I live with my girlfriend and 6 year old son who I love the most. I am owner of PedalPark dirtjump facilities and together with Jeremy Struik we own two dirtjump spost in the top of Holland where we do a lot for the biking community, we give bmx classes and do freestyle demo’s at a lot of events. I am shooting photos for about 4 years now, starting out just shooting my friends riding street/dirt bikes and bmx. Later on I started shooting bigger events like zwartecross stuntshow and rebeljam. Now I shoot a lot for monster energy on all different events motocross, fmx, bmx, lifestyle. I also own a studio with two other photographers from the FART magazine where we do a lot of studio and portrait shoots, every month we have a photoshoot weekend. www.fartmagazine.nl
2. How can you describe your style and what do you like to shoot the most?
I would describe my style as creative I like to play with light and am not afraid to use photoshop, like making a sequence or panoramic picture. My ideal shooting day is just a day at the trails with the boys, taking it easy get some crazy shots and finish it off with a bbq. I also like to push myself at a big event, everything is going crazy fast but you still have to get the shots.
3. Who or what inspires you in your personal life and in your pictures?
My biggest inspiration is my son everything I do I do for him. I also get inspired by my friends who push themselves to the max on their bikes every day. I love to see them progress and always want to be around to get it on photo or video.
4. What’s the best part of being a photographer?
Capturing a memory !!!
5. What’s your current setup?
I still use my old canon 550D with some cheap external flashes, after every shoot I tell myself I should get a new camera but it still does the job so I keep pushing it. I am currently in the market for a new camera but can’t decide which one to get. Thinking of making a switch to a mirrorles system camera like the Samsung nx20 or canon m series.
6. Any advise for all the photographers out there starting out?
Go out and shoot!!!
7. Where can people check more of your work?
I don’t have a website yet, should get one but I love to shoot and hate to sit behind a computer screen. I put a lot of my work on pinkbike.com a worldwide bike website and on Flickr. If you want to check me out just ad me on facebook I put a lot of my work on there after every event or session.
8. Who shall we feature in the next ‘Art gallery’?
Maybe Jarno Scheurer is a good choice I know he can shoot some crazy pictures and he keeps a lot of them to himself maybe for the gallery he wants to show some of his work.
